Revision Rule sets the list of criteria to select an appropriate revision of components based on rule entry to configure the product structure.

Revisions of each component in product structure is evaluated on the below rule entry, when listed in revision rule. Revision rule entries are listed in order of precedence. The first revision rule entry is of highest precedence with decreasing order below. I just had a user encounter this issue and ran across this thread; in my case, the user had created a Revision, then decided to manually re-identify the Revision type we use three different Rev rules, each associated with a specific Release workflow type. The user had originally created a Production alpha Revision, then decided he only had time to process a Prototype numeric revision.

He re-identified the Revison attribute on the Item Rev and all child datasets and proceeded with his Prototype release. The error came when he later went to revise his released Prototype part to the initial Production revision.

Running "Purge" from the right click menu on the affected Item Revsion cleared the error, and now the user can successfully revise all affected parts.

You can also propagate any number of other property values. You must simply create the rules to control what properties to propagate. You can also propagate forward or backward through multiple levels in the product structure.
